The Legacy of Dolly Parton

As I write this, it's the eve of Dolly Parton Day in Portland, September 25, a nod to "9 to 5," commemorating the legendary artist. Venues around the city and beyond will memorialize Dolly with live music, special menus, and festivities. Kudos to Council President Jamie Dunphy, his team, and Mayor Keith Wilson for calling on the community to come together to celebrate Dolly, who brought Americans (and folks around the world) together like no one else.

Beyond being a gifted songwriter, performer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, Dolly Parton was an extraordinary human being. Dolly was kind, generous, insightful, curious, and loving, qualities we could all use more of right now. No matter their politics, people across the country could connect with her lyrics, spirit, and voice, and see a bit of their own experience, struggles, or dreams reflected in her music. She touched us all.

It's a timely reminder of music's essential power to unite, heal, and inspire. It's the same power we try to tap into at MusicOregon, working to bring our state's music community together across genre and geography.

Wherever you are, may every day be a Dolly Parton Day.
